Kate has a remarkable ability to ask the right questions, helping me uncover patterns and perspectives I hadn't seen before - Brad, School Principal

Kate’s Story

Ten years ago I founded a school in NSW –  with a big dream to create something exciting, aligned with my values and beliefs about what education could be. I had just come back to Australia after 4 years of working in the USA, helping American education leaders to improve outcomes for their country’s  most disadvantaged students. I saw some amazing teachers and schools in that time who were doing truly great things for students, but I also saw way too much burnout, frustration and exhaustion for staff.

I had an ambitious vision to create a school that not only provided a genuinely new alternative for senior years of schooling for NSW kids, but also supported teachers to excel, flourish and NOT burn out. I started operating a school with nothing more than me, 3 visionary teachers, 25 students, and no admin staff, in rented premises with a hot-desk office. 10 years on GOAL College employs 36 staff across two campuses, achieves a 99% HSC graduation rate, 98% engagement with work or study 3 months after finishing year 12, and 30% of our students go straight into University from Year 12, without any of them having an ATAR.

And the fabulous results we achieve come from a base of students who are for the most part seriously disengaged with mainstream school by the time they reach year 10.

Along the way, I have built an incredible Dream Team of teachers and admin staff. The satisfaction rates for our staff are consistently through the roof, teacher retention is super high, and in 2023 I won the inaugural Australian Teacher award for improving health and wellbeing for both students and staff.

And critically, I have maintained my passion and love for what I do in this school. But it has not always been easy. Challenging the status quo and building something new and exceptional comes with risks – and I am proud to have met them, worked through them and succeeded.

The Secret Sauce

So, what is the secret to achieving this kind of bold vision and succeeding when the going gets tough?

You need three things:

  1. A strong Principal who has support to grow in their role and stay open to new perspectives.

  2. A functional, united leadership team who make time to reflect on, and improve, their practice.

  3. A deep understanding of the values and heart of what your school offers, so that vision is maintained and refreshed.

In education, leadership isn’t just about strategy and operations — it’s about people, purpose, and clear direction. Most of the time though, school leaders at all levels are caught in the relentless cycle of “doing” and what often gets squeezed out — quietly and consistently — is time to reflect, think, and learn from experience.

Without the pause to examine what’s working, what’s not, and why — patterns get missed, insight slips away, and growth stalls. How often have we seen professional development being well received in the moment, but then getting ‘left in the carpark’ at the end of the day?

To make professional learning effective, you need to work at a transformational level, where participants learn how to be authentically aligned with values, confident in their strengths, and resilient enough to both forensically analyse what they do, and let go of what is not working.

As someone who has been a school principal, a director in the NSW Education Department, a board director, and an international education leader for decades, I understand these challenges. I am here to help your school leadership team to step back from the noise, process their experiences,  uncover fresh perspectives and move forward with renewed purpose, aligned with the unique values of your school and needs of your students.

The two-term package includes:

  • Strengths Assessment + 360° Feedback process for each participant

I highly recommend Kate to anyone looking to elevate their professional growth with a thoughtful and results-driven approach - Carly, Senior Curriculum Manager

How much will this cost?

You already know that if it’s really cheap it’s rarely worth it. And let’s face it, we would spend money in a heartbeat for students to get benefit. Making good choices for our students is, of course, what we should do, but let’s not forget that if your staff are drowning, your students will too. Investing in leaders and teachers, especially right now, is critical for staff wellbeing and retention and none of us can afford to lose good people.
